hey

I’m Shala

I’m a black woman.

I’m a millennial.

I’m a naturalista.

I’m a creative.

AND MOST IMPORTANT, I’M A CHRISTIAN.

Yet I rarely see my complete self represented in today’s media. My faith is my life’s foundation, and it fully enhances every other part of me. Yet, most of the time when I watch a show, read a blog that reps the culture, or attend an event, my reality is missing.

I feel like my views, interests, and lifestyle choices don’t always “fit in.” I feel peculiar . . and I believe other women do too. That’s why I believe God led me to create Peculiar On Purpose.

peculiar on purpose

Peculiar on Purpose was inspired from the King James Version of 1 Peter 2:9: But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light . . .

In this context, peculiar means special possession and set apart for God’s chosen purpose. For Christian women, believing in Jesus means being claimed as one of God’s precious treasures. Yet, the very act of being “set apart” can often create internal battles over our identities, especially when we struggle to find spaces that genuinely represent and resonate with us.

This is why I’ve created Peculiar on Purpose—a home for women of faith who have felt out of place, a space where we feel truly understood and can authentically belong.

who are peculiar women?

  • We are women of faith, dedicated to living for God. We love Jesus but also wrestle with faith, ask God hard questions, long for meaningful relationships, and care deeply about culture, politics, purpose—and everything in between.
  • We actively uplift our womanhood, our ethnic backgrounds, and the communities that society often ignores.
  • We are everything from artists and fashionistas to stay-at-home mothers and #girlbosses, a quirky and talented mix that doesn’t fit into a single category.
  • We are different because God intended us to be.

Each one of us is a multifaceted mix of personalities, talents, gifts, and ideas. And by celebrating who we are, we can bring our Creator glory because, ultimately, our uniqueness is a direct reflection of His.

Have you ever felt peculiar?

Peculiar on Purpose was made for you! I’m excited for us to create an engaging, transparent, and relatable community that empowers every woman to embrace the beauty of being different.

I hope to connect with you soon! Be purposeful . . . and stay peculiar,

“It’s not a burden to love Him, and represent Him, and be who you are . . .  as fly, and as hot, and as whatever. And to still love God and serve Him. It’s not a contradiction.” -Lauryn Hill
