Y’all, I just got back from a quick birthday trip to Cabo, and I have to tell you: this carefree vacation it was exactly what my soul needed.
I’ve started calling Cabo my “zen destination.” There’s something about that Pacific breeze and the low humidity that just feels like a hug from God. But this trip was different from my usual getaways. Leading up to it, life was heavy. Family and friends had so much going on, and honestly? I was just plain tired.
Usually, the “pre-vacay” to-do list is a marathon: the fresh mani-pedi, the perfect protective style, and the brand-new resort wear so I can look “Instagram-ready.” But this time, I just didn’t have it in me. And instead of stressing about it, I decided to do something radical: I just showed up as I was.
No fresh manicure—just a simple clear top coat. I wore my flat twists on the plane and didn’t even bother taking them down until we touched down in Mexico. I didn’t buy a single new outfit; I grabbed an old swimsuit, one pair of sandals, and a dress already hanging in my closet for my birthday dinner.
No frills. No extras. No “performing.” And you know what? It was the most freeing vacation I’ve had in a long time.
We spend so much time trying to mask our imperfections or curate a specific “aesthetic,” but there is so much peace in the “unpolished.” It felt so good not to worry about my hair shrinking or whether I looked put-together while lounging by the water. I wasn’t focused on being camera-ready; I was focused on being present.
This trip reminded me that we don’t have to “perform” for God, and we shouldn’t have to perform for the world, either. There is a deep, holy rest that comes when you give yourself permission to be imperfect. I was unpolished, unbothered, and completely happy.
What about you, sis? Have you ever ditched the “vacation rules” and just let yourself be? I’d love to hear how you find ways to truly rest and not perform while on vacation!
